In the town of Ventimiglia, with it’s major international events such as the flower battalion, the medieval festival in August, the regional final of Miss Italy, the Desbaratu and the large weekly market on Friday, one of the first of its kind in Italy and Europe. The city is surrounded by the sea and mountains. Ventimiglia has plenty to offer to its visitors. The historic part of the city ‘Ventimiglia Alta’ has a rich history.
In the narrow pedestrian streets lined with charming buildings and ancient monuments such as the Monastery of Canonichesse Lateran, the cathedral and baptistery, the former church of San Francesco, the City Library, the Church of St. Michael and the walls date from the sixteenth century. The village is accessible through the New Gate. The large monastery complex of Canonichesse, built on the ruins of the ancient castle of the Counts of Ventimiglia, on top of the hill dates from the eleventh century. The central square is surrounded by the cathedral and the monastery, the Episcopal Palace and the former town hall.
